Executive Summary & One-Pager Templates

A one-pager exists because the document it summarises will get four minutes of attention. Below are four finished executive summary templates — a SWOT card, a post-mortem, a research summary and a launch roadmap — each generated from a real working document.

What a one-pager is actually for

A one-pager is not a shorter report. It is a different artefact with a different job: to let someone who will not read the report make the decision the report was written to inform. That means it carries conclusions and the few figures that support them, and deliberately drops the method.

The failure mode is a shrunken report — nine-point text, every section represented, nothing legible. If a reader cannot get the argument in about thirty seconds, the page has not replaced the document, it has just joined it.

Pick the structure the content already has

Business documents come in a handful of recognisable shapes, and naming yours settles most of the question before anything is drawn. The mistake is choosing by document type — quarterly review, market study — when what matters is what the reader has to do with it.

  • Independent readings and KPIs → a dashboard of framed tiles
  • Four quadrants compared → a matrix
  • A timeline plus actions on one page → dense modules
  • Phases with gates between them → a route or roadmap

Why generating beats rebuilding a slide

The expensive part of a hand-built summary is not the layout, it is that it becomes a second copy of the data. Every re-typed figure can be transposed, and the summary is the artefact where a wrong number costs the most. Generating from the source text removes the copy step entirely.

It also makes the summary cheap to redo when the numbers get restated the day before the review — paste the corrected text and generate again, rather than hunting through a deck for every place the old figure appeared.

Questions

Questions about executive summary templates

These examples are deliberately at the restrained end: line work, muted colour, nothing that looks like a consumer app. That is the register internal documents are read in, and getting it wrong is the fastest way for good analysis to be taken less seriously. Set your organisation's exact colour if you have one.

Yes, and that is where they pay off. Start from the same example each cycle and the format stays stable while the numbers change, so readers stop re-learning the page and start just reading it.

Paste the sections that carry the findings and the figures. The limit is 400,000 characters so a full report fits, but a tighter input produces a sharper page — the method and appendices rarely earn space on a one-pager.

No. It frames the figures in your text as labelled tiles rather than plotting a dataset. Keep genuine charts where they are and use the one-pager for the summary around them.

Make one from your own text

Pick the example closest to what you are summarising and paste your content — the recipe comes with it.
